Day 8 – Bath

A day walking around the ancient city of Bath.

We woke up this morning in a nice attic bedroom of a house near a busy road in Bath. The noise of traffic outside our B&B made for a fitful night’s sleep. But we’re located close to everything interesting, and the room is a good value.

This resort town was the site of baths in Roman times, then was more-or-less abandoned by everyone but monks until the 1600’s. Most of the present city was built during this period.

First we walked around in Royal Victoria Park, then to the Georgian Garden, and around a circular block called The Circus. We almost got tired of looking at limestone buildings with grand columns. We also got to visit some elegant Georgian-style English gardens.

While admiring gardens in the park, a passerby heard us chatting and asked, “Is that a Canadian accent I’m hearing?” Obbie answered, “No, but I’m glad you think so.” The local accent is starting to imprint on our voices.

Rozie traveled with the wrong pair of boots, and they’ve been killing her feet. So we spent some time at a store called Itchy Feet to find her the right boots for seven more weeks of walking around in Europe.

With new boots on Rozie’s feet, we put her other boots in a box, found the nearest Post Office and put them on a “slow boat” home.

The Backpacker’s Hostel downtown has been a valuable resource in Bath, even though we didn’t stay there. We stopped there today to make reservations for a tour tomorrow that’ll bring us to Stonehenge and some other places; and we also made reservations to stay at their sister hostel in Glastonbury tomorrow night.

Our other mid-day errand was to stop at the bus station to find out how to get to Glastonbury by bus. (In the UK, local public transit is the “bus”. Intercity travel is done by “coach”.)

We grabbed some food at the grocery store and had a picnic in the Parade Gardens before taking a leisurely walk to our room.
